  • Doll FAQ

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 19, 2006, 6:35 AM
Okay, I figured it's past time for a mini-FAQ to cover the basic questions folks ask me about my dolls :) So without further ado, here we go!
    ___________________________________

    Q: What are these dolls?

A: My dolls shown here are Asian ball-jointed dolls (ABJDs, or more commonly, BJDs). They are high-quality dolls made of polyurethane resin and articulated with ball joints and elastic cord. Their sculpts have an Asian, often anime-influenced aesthetic, giving them an appearance quite different from most Western dolls. BJDs are highly customizable; they are designed to have their hair and eyes changed easily, and can be painted and even sanded/resculpted to create the owner's desired look.

More specific info on the make/brand/type of each of my dolls is here.

    Q: Did you make them?

A: I wish! ^^; The majority of BJDs are created by small companies, but there are single-person operations out there, too. The most I've done for my dolls, in terms of customization, is reshaping by sanding and some faceup (face paint) augmentation...

Q: Where can I get one?

A: A friend has a nice list here of doll manufacturers' sale sites; there are also many dolls available on eBay (check the Dollfie category) and at the Marketplace on the Den of Angels forum.

Q: Aren't there any cheap ones?

A: In a word, no. And if you see a price that seems too good to be true, it probably is. This isn't a "cheap" hobby -- after the doll itself, there are eyes, wigs, and clothing to be considered. That being said, however, doll-people definitely feel that it's worth the price, so!

These dolls also retain their resale value even through being played with, so they're not a terrible risk in that regard... If you find that a doll isn't for you, you should probably be able to get most of your investment back. But see the next question.

Q: What kind should I get? Do you have any suggestions?

A: My only suggestion is to get a doll you really pine for. If a doll's only appeal to you is that it's less expensive, you may find yourself not enjoying it as much as you thought you would. Look around and check out the possibilities; there are more dolls available now than ever!

Oh yes, but still not as often as "where can I get one" or "do you make those". *L*

The "did you make it" always kills me. ^^; Of course, there are a few people out there for which it's true, and I suppose they get annoyed at the "where did you buy that" questions, so... ;D

I dunno, I think I'd be flattered if I made my own doll and someone asked where I bought it. I think it'd be less annoying than asking if I made it when I didn't.

Not that I find it all that annoying really.

Hehe, I think I'm thinking of something like what happened to my friend at Otakon... she makes incredible costumes and some mindblowing sword props, and someone asked her where she bought something -- her sword, I think it was -- and she was incensed ;D I would be too, for that much work. T_T There's a sort of implication that you don't have the skill to make what you did.

On the other hand, I don't think I'd feel that way about my doll clothes, so maybe it's a matter of how much effort went into it.

But yeah, on the doll front, it's not particularly annoying, especially when the people who ask generally aren't familiar with BJDs; it's a totally innocent curiosity, and curiosity is good! :D

This is really good info! I totally agree with the pining thing. I was thinking about getting a bjd, but I just couldn't find one that wowed me, so I spent the money on a tonner that knocked me out instead :aww:

Oh yeah well if they didn't believe the person made it then yeah that'd piss me off. If it was a "where did you buy that? OMG you made that?!" thing then it'd be different.

...those posts were getting darn long. Good FAQ. Hehe. It makes me glad that I had someone like you to ask when I started to get interested=)

Some people feel guilty about their anxieties and regard them as a defect of faith but they are afflictions, not sins. Like all afflictions, they are, if we can so take them, our share in the passion of Christ.

    Thankies! And, well, those are the days I fondly remember, when there was kind and helpful advice to be found from a relatively much smaller community.. =o Le sigh. XD;
