Background:
Adopted as an orphan by the mage Geoffrey Levalier, Devin spent five happy years learning the basics of magic. Not long after his 13th birthday, however, the idyll came to an end when a raiding party from the Naga demon clan, led by an ambitious demon named Sikhander, killed Levalier and left Devin abused and beaten to an inch of his life.

There was one reason they hadn't murdered the boy as well -- the angel Luciel, bound to Devin by Levalier in the moments before the old mage died. With a Power to protect and teach him, Devin continued his magical education in a rather unconventional way, focusing on the rather esoteric field of paper talismans, and on gaining the strength needed to defeat demons. This has resulted in some holes in his basic training, but no one can deny that he excels in his chosen fields...

In recent times, Devin has begun to pursue his vendetta against the Naga, pitting him directly against Sikhander, now the leader of the clan, and resulting in Sikhander's long-term banishment from the Physical Plane. This has not prevented several demonic plots against the mage, but so far he's managed, with help, to stay out of their clutches.

Background:
Devin was a fairly well-adjusted kid being raised by a single dad until his world was turned upside-down when he was 13. On one horrific day, Devin's father was murdered, and he himself was assaulted by the killer. Though the murderer was apprehended and is currently serving a life sentence, his existence continues to haunt Devin, who wishes he could forget...

After the death of his father, Devin was adopted by his best friend Ellis's parents, since he had no other known family. The two "brothers" went through high school toying around with cheap guitars and rock n' roll fantasies, but by the time they were in college, they realized that if they took it seriously, they might have a chance to really do something with their music. With the two of them as founders, Mercury Phase was born.

At first, the music was an excellent distractor from Devin's darker thoughts and memories, but as the band grew more famous, something else happened: his father's murderer, Sikhander, apparently found him again, even from prison, and began to send him strange gifts, most notably elaborate bouquets of flowers. The full effects of this peculiar harassment on Devin's state of mind have yet to be seen, but it already seems to have driven him to riskier behavior than he engaged in when he was younger. With Allistair in the picture now, the rest of the band hopes that an anchor will keep Devin tied to the reality of here-and-now, and out of the darker corners of his mind.
